Will the NRA back Roy Barnes again for governor?

An endorsement from the National Rifle Association (NRA) is seen as one of the biggest endorsements a candidate can get. In some cases it is, while in other cases is not (Rob Teilhet in 2010 Dem. Primary)

So here we are in a governor's race than many have rated as a Toss-Up two Pro-Gun candidates for governor vying to replace Sonny Perdue next year.

Roy Barnes was endorsed by the powerful gun group in '98 & '02.

Said Tanya Metaksa back in 1998: Roy Barnes is an NRA life member and he has the highest rating from the NRA a candidate may receive. "An experienced legislator, he truly shares NRA's bedrock principles of safety, responsibility and freedom."


Barnes' family had sold guns at the Barnes Store in Mableton for decades, and he learned to hunt at a young age. As a legislator, he has opposed waiting periods for gun buyers, but supported the instant background check that is currently part of state law.

His opponent Nathan Deal has also been supported by the NRA as well for his votes against anti-gun legislation as a former congressman from the 9th District.

We will have to wait & see if the NRA gets involved in this race before its all over.

NRA Endorses Rob Teilhet for Attorney General

Today, State Representative and candidate for Attorney General, Rob Teilhet, became the only Democrat in the race for Attorney General to be endorsed by the National Rifle Association (NRA). The NRA gave him the highest rating—an “A”—for his strong record defending the 2nd Amendment.

The NRA endorses candidates not on party lines, but on their demonstrated records on gun-related issues. Their website states, “Our endorsement is not given lightly; it is something that is reserved for those candidates who meet certain criteria and something that must be earned.”

“I’m proud to be endorsed by the NRA. I firmly believe that all law-abiding citizens have the right to bear arms as guaranteed to them by our nation’s constitution,” said Rep. Teilhet.

Today’s endorsement adds to a growing list of support. Other endorsers include: elected members of the Atlanta City Council Michael Julian Bond, Keisha Lance Bottoms and Alex Wan. Other endorsers include former prosecutor, Speaker of the House, Lt. Governor, appellate judge and Supreme Court Justice George T. Smith, the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, the IBEW Local 613, the Teamsters, Marshal Greg Countryman of Muscogee County, former legislator and U.S. Senate candidate Jim Martin, DeKalb Solicitor General Robert James, Civil Rights Leaders Representative Tyrone Brooks and Elder Bill Harris, the Chairmen of the Legislative Black Caucus, Senator Emanuel Jones, and well over 50 current and former Democratic members of the state legislature.

Rob Teilhet’s campaign for Attorney General focuses on protecting Georgia’s children, crime prevention, ethics in government, and consumer protection. Teilhet is widely known as a champion in the General Assembly for protecting Georgians from rip-offs and con artists. He has been a reliable supporter of law enforcement and crime victims as a member of the House Judiciary Committee. Teilhet has also consistently fought for stronger ethics laws.


This is a huge endorsement for Teilhet. The NRA has a good track record in endorsing candidates.

DuBose Porter is a Gun Owner's Best Friend

How on earth did I miss this?

A State Representative, serving his 14th term in the General Assemblyfrom the 143rd House District,Representative Porter is also a candidatefor Governor in 2010. In addition to hisservice in the General Assembly andbeing an attorney, Mr. Porter also ownsand operates nine newspapers in middle Georgia with the flagship publication,the Courier Herald, being located in hishome town of Dublin.

He also publishes a supplement to the newspapers called Porter's Guideto Hunting & Fishing in Middle Georgia. During his speech and questions afterward he was very open and candid with the attendees on many issues. One attendee observed that he sounded honest and more like one of us than your usual politician that never gives a firm answer to any question.

This is probably due to the person he really is combined with his early learning where, among other things, he earned his Eagle Scout Badge in 1970. His strong personal values have continued with his marriage to wife Carol and the raising of their four sons, all of whom are Eagle Scouts.

Needless to say having a long term pro-gun owner rights person of DuBose
Porter's stature take the time to visit with us, and stay with us for the whole meeting, is much appreciated by all the members of the NRA State Association. DuBose, Thanks Again, for being with us at our 2010 Annual Meeting and working to protect our gun rights in the General Assembly.
