The First Congressional District that represents southeast Georgia has been reliably conservative over the past two decades. However, there have been spots of blue over areas of the First Congressional District in previous election cycles.
Savannah is the biggest city in southeast Georgia. However, two counties in particular can be seen as a litmus test in terms of trying to turn southeast Georgia blue—Glynn County and McIntosh County.
Georgians have dealt with teachers being furloughed more frequently and other budget cuts from the conservative Georgia Assembly since Republican Sonny Perdue was re-elected in 2006. Additionally, the recent Drill, Baby, Drill mantra touted by conservative Republicans such as Michael Steele, Sarah Palin and the First District’s very own Jack Kingston, have toned down their rhetoric considerably since the recent Gulf Coast oil spill.
