Doug Heckman Deserves Better

A question that has crossed my mind recenty is why isn't the DCCC, or anyone from the Democratic Party helping Doug Heckman in his run for congress for a second time?

This is a open seat that was vacated by John Linder who decided not to run for re-election. His chief of staff Rob Woodall is seeking to repalce his former boss as representatie for the people of the 7th Congressional District.

Heckman got 38% last time around, the most a democrat has gotten in that district in over 15 years & one would think democrats would be targeting this seat as a potential pickup opportunity for them as they brace for a possible loss of the House of Representatives.

Its hard to find candidates like Doug to run for office in this state (congress), especially as a democrat. (Remember we had Bill Gillespie, Bobby Saxon in 2008) His background & accomplishments are one that outshines that of his opponent Rob Woodall, who's claim to fame is a book that he helped Linder & Neil Boortz co-write regarding the "FairTax".

Heckman is a graduate of West Point, a former Green Beret, US Army Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel. while Deployed to Afghanistan area soon after 9/11, earning a bronze star & other medals, US Army Colonel & Advisor to the Iraqi Army while deployed in Iraq for 13 months, Special Forces Colonel, briefed the US Commanding Generals on the daily activities of Green Berets and Navy SEALs across the battlespace.

Past President, local Homeowners Association (3 years) , Advisory Board – Operation One Voice Boy Scouts – numerous positions (current) ,Serve as leader on Senator Johnny Isakson’s Academy Selection Board , Serve on Investment Committee for West Point Endowment. His background also includes business where he has worked in the financial services field overseeing companies with $40-50 Billion in assets, he's active in his local church & has two sons who are also at West Point, following in their dad's footsteps.

Like I said, Woodall's major plank is the Fair Tax in addition he wants to get rid of the 14th amendment of the U.S. Constitution, among other things. Plus Woodall is far from being a outsider. He is a washington insider. having been there since 1994.

Heckman is a conservative democrat who loves his country, supports the second amendment, wants to see fiscal discipline, energy security, real Tax Reform that benefits all Americans, not for certain people, etc.

Doug Heckman deserves better. He didn't have to run for congress, he could have stayed in the private sector, but decided to run for congress because he felt like congress lost its way in not dealing with problems such as the deficit, energy reform, jobs, etc.

Extreme Partisanship is Irresponsible and No Way to Represent this District

NORCROSS, Georgia – Doug Heckman, candidate for the House of Representatives in Georgia’s 7th Congressional District, has taken over the billboards previously used by candidate Jody Hice in the Primary. These billboards inflamed partisan divisions with their caustic symbolism . Heckman’s new message on the three billboards summarizes his campaign theme of ending extreme politics as usual and getting back to statesmanship on behalf of the people: “Had Enough of Partisan Politics?”

Heckman remarked: “Partisanship is harming our government and grinding reasonable debate to a halt. These cynical rules of engagement are being practiced at the expense of our Country. Being very partisan helps one get re-elected.”

He said: “Leadership in this environment requires perspective and balance. My life experiences are qualitatively different from my opponent and have been honed in many different arenas such as business, the church, and my military service. I am a statesman, not a hardened ideologue.”

Heckman had previously commented on the fact that all Georgia Republicans, including his opponent, had to sign loyalty oaths pledging allegiance to their Party in order to qualify as candidates. “Woodall has come of age on the Far-Right being taught that the way to succeed is to be as partisan and purist as possible. It is the citizens of our Country who have been suffering as a result of this kind of politics.”

He also said: “I took an oath as an Army officer to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. I find it disturbing that someone would make a pledge to a political party and then mindlessly spout partisan talking points because their GOP Party elders demand it.”

Heckman added: “Organizations you’ve never heard of control our politics through money and influence. Political insiders like my opponent have gotten used to the lobbying industry being the 4th branch of our Government. This has to stop. Independence from these influences and moderation is what is called for now more than ever.”

Heckman recently returned from his second military deployment to Iraq where he earned his third combat Bronze Star. He was stationed in the Baghdad area with other Special Operations soldiers. He previously served a tour of duty in Afghanistan in Oct 2001.

He has long-standing ties in the community and real-world experience in national security and in business. Doug Heckman is a West Point graduate and has two sons at West Point and one daughter at Norcross High School. Heckman also has an MBA from Duke University and has lived in the 7th District for 20 years with his wife and three children.

The location of the 3 billboards are: on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. (southbound just before South Berkeley Lake Rd.), I-85 South before the Beaver Ruin exit, and S.R. 20 southbound at the Braselton Hwy/124 intersection.

The 7th Congressional District is being vacated by John Linder who retired last year. His aide Rob Woodall is looking to replace Linder as congressman, but I always thought this race was a possible pickup for democrats this year despite the mood towards democrats & I still feel that way. Heckman's message ought to resonate with fustrated voters of the district.

Doug Heckman (D-Norcross) is the lone democrat in the race to replace John Linder as Rep of the 7th District. The seat was left open after the retirement of Lnder earlier this year who decided not to run for re-election.

The Conservative Democrat served in active Duty for 8 months, lived on US Army base in Baghdad. As a Special Forces Colonel, briefed the US Commanding Generals on the daily activities of Green Berets and Navy SEALs across the battlespace. Earned my third Bronze Star.

He served as US Army Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel while in Afghanistan in 2001 & 2002. He is a graduate of West Point where he currently has two sons who are attending the military institute.

He was a Managing Director for a $40 billion asset management firm, before that he was as a Managing Director for a global asset management firm with $50 billion in assets and I served on the 5 member US Board of Directors.

This is his second run for congress, last time in 2008, he got 38% of the vote, the most a democrat has gotten in that district since the early 90s.

If elected, his priorities are: Jobs, Education, Energy & National Defense.

But one of the biggest issues this election will be fiscal responsibility. From his website Heckman says:

Democrats and Republicans both shoulder blame for the national government’s lack of fiscal discipline. According to Citizens Against Government Waste, the Republican-controlled US Congress of 2003-2007 and the Democrat-controlled legislature of 2007-2008 rang up a combined $110 Billion in pork-barrel projects, which does not include expenses for the War on Terror. The new 2009 Budget has been submitted by the President and is already in deficit by over $400 Billion— unacceptable!

I couldn't agree more Mr. Heckman!

His plan to reduce government spending include things such as:



Reform broken programs and channel money into important projects. For instance, this year’s IRS operating budget was $11 billion. Our national tax code is so complicated that it takes a huge bureaucracy working lots of hours to determine each citizen’s taxes and enforce payment. By completely overhauling and simplifying the tax code, we could channel a lot of money towards other important projects while reducing spending. For example, we might cut the IRS budget to $6 billion, spend $3 billion more on education, and cut $2 billion completely. This is just one example of how we might increase funding for important programs while cutting overall spending

Institute a Balanced Budget Amendment that contains a Pay-As-You-Go provision. Our government should keep spending in line with revenue except in specific extenuating circumstances. This will prevent our racking up trillions more dollars in debt. Limiting the national debt will increase the value of the dollar and improve Americans’ buying power in world markets. That's what I'm talking about!

Heckman will face one of 8 republicans vying for the republican nomination for the 7th District. This is a Open seat that, if with the right assistance from DCCC & the State Democratic Party, Heckman can win this seat in the fall. Looking at the weak & underwhelming field of republican candidates, Heckman has a Great shot of winning that seat. Vote For Doug Heckman!

Army Veteran Doug Heckman to run for 7th Congressional District

Received another tip that Doug Heckman (D-Norcross), who ran for the 7th Congressional District back in 2008 will run again for the seat in the fall.

Heckman, a conservative democrat returned from another tour of duty in Iraq where he was a Special Forces Colonel, briefed the US Commanding Generals on the daily activities of Green Berets and Navy SEALs across the battlespace, which in the process Earned his third Bronze Star.

Heckman was also a U.S. Army Colonel, serving as a senoir advisor to the Iraqi Army, which he earned a Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge among other awards & was a U.S. Army Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel while deployed to Afghanistan right after the 9/11 attacks.




His most recent job was as a Managing Director for a $40 billion asset management firm. He also served as leader on Senator Johnny Isakson’s Academy Selection Board &
currently serves on Investment Committee for West Point Endowment.

He's married with two sons who are cadets at West Point & one daughter.

Doug Heckman Back from Iraq. Another Run for Congress?

Former congressional candidate Doug Heckman earned his third Bronze Star.

Heckman, a Democrat who challenged U.S. Rep. John Linder in the 2008 election, recently returned to Norcross after a deployment in Iraq.

“I am proud to have had the opportunity to serve our country again,” said Heckman, a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves who was stationed in the Baghdad area.

The Green Beret had previously served yearlong tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“The situation in Iraq is vastly improved from my last tour of duty in 2006-07,” he said. “Our continued support to this nascent democracy could affect the strategic balance in the Middle East for years to come.”

Upon his return home, the West Point graduate said he sees battles here, too.

“I see that the partisan bickering in our own federal government has reached new levels since I left the U.S. in 2009,” he said. That is bad for all of us as our national problems have grown larger and the prospects for compromise have diminished. I saw the people of Iraq take back their government, and I think we should, too.”

The father of three from Norcross added, “The percentage of politicians with military experience is at an all-time low in Washington. We need more combat veterans in government.”

So if you read between the lines here, this tells me Doug is maybe thinking running for congress again this year. I sure hope so. He got 38% of the vote last time. The experience he got last time would payoff if he decides to run for public office again. Given the mood toward incumbents this year, this maybe the year Linder gets knocked off.
