35 GA Sheriffs switch support from Sam Olens (R) to Greg Hecht (D)

In the statewide race for Attorney General, 34 sheriffs have switched their endorsement from incumbent Sam Olens  to Democratic challenger Greg Hecht. This bipartisan group includes ten Republicans.

“Sheriffs want an Attorney General who is going to prosecute corruption and enforce the law, and has the experience to back it up.” said Hecht. “I prosecuted cases myself as an assistant District Attorney, and I’m proud to have the support of these sheriffs.”

It is disappointing that this has become a controversy. I worked with Greg Hecht when I was a crime victim advocate trying to stop the system's revolving doors with recidivist legislation for violent offenders back in the 90s, and he was the very rare elected official who was great on victim issues -- he's the one Democrat I'll be voting for in this election because he is honest and deeply committed to actually protecting women and children from predators.

Sam Olens' ad trying to accuse Hecht of cozying up to child molesters (actually routine paperwork transferring long-term prisoners to different facilities at their request) is the most dishonest and ethically repulsive ad this political season. You and I may not agree on much, but I hope that you and others use your forum to call out Olens for this deeply sleazy move. It's not supporting crime victims: it's pimping them for political gain and lying about an honorable man in the process.
