The Coffee County Board of Education (BOE) held their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, January 28, and approved three dates selected by the teachers for the three furlough days recently handed down by the state. The board also recognized Coffee High School Agriculture teacher and FFA director Mike Tanner for his recent election into the Georgia Agriculture and Education Hall of Fame, a first for any teacher in Coffee County history.
The board unanimously approved to set the three furlough dates for Friday, February 12, Monday, March 8, and Friday, April 30. These three furlough dates result in a loss of $554,000 in state funding, which is part of the estimated $1.3 million cut to be officially handed down by the state in the coming weeks.
Superintendent Dr. Steve Wilmoth discussed the cuts and stated he believes the board can “swing the balance of the cut with an additional reduction in force.”
