Blake Aued of Online Athens reports Phyllis Jenkins Barrow, mother of U.S. Congressman John Barrow (D-GA) & longtime democratic party stalwart passed away monday at the age of 89.Barrow, an Athens native, was a World War II Women's Army Corps veteran and an associate professor at the University of Georgia. She was active in county, state and national Democratic organizations, civil rights, and numerous civic and charitable organizations.
Barrow was a lifelong lover of politics, dating back to her college years. She was a delegate to five Democratic conventions, a member of the Democratic National Committee and voted for friend Jimmy Carter in the 1976 Electoral College, according to the Clarke County Democratic Committee.
