Says she'll work next year for Democratic candidates.Chatham County Democratic Party Chair Janice Shay is resigning so she can work next year for two Democratic candidates.
"I can't do that as chair," said Shay, who announced her departure Monday night at the Chatham County Democratic Committee meeting.
The chair is supposed to remain neutral in contests for the party's nominations for various offices. The group will convene Dec. 14, when Shay's resignation is effective, to elect someone to fill the remaining year of Shay's two-year term.
Promising to re-establish a party headquarters and focus on fundraising, Savannah attorney Will Claiborne said Tuesday he will run.
Shay said she could not name the Democrats she plans to help because they have not announced their candidacies.
In the past, she has assisted, among others, the late former Texas Gov. Anne Richards and former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young.
