Candidate Spotlight: Audrey Stewart (D-St. Simons Island) HD 179
Down on the Coast, Audrey Stewart is running for the Democratic Nomination against perrenial candidate Leroy Dumas to face the winner of the GOP primary. The seat was formerly occupied by Jerry Keen (R), but he decided to forgo re-election under a cloud of ethical lapses.
Stewart is the the mother of two grown daughters and the grandmother of four, is a retired schoolteacher and librarian. She received her B.S. degree in Education from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, her Certification in School Libraries from the University of Texas, in Austin, and her Masters in Library Science from Kent State University, in Kent, Ohio.
Work experiences include serving as Clerk Treasurer of a county Library Board of Trustees and an administrator of programs for a five county governmental board.
Stewart and her husband, David, a retired University professor and administrator, have lived on St. Simons Island for 12 years. She is active in the St. Simons Presbyterian Church, where she has served as an Elder and Clerk of Session, and the Glynn County Democratic Party, where she has held various posts on the Executive Board.
Says Stewart: Our state government is in danger of losing its ability to pay for basic services such as adequate schools, teachers, police and prisons," Stewart said. "My experience in both education and governmental financing at a practical level, as well as my maturity and judgment, has provided me with skills that are needed to serve the people of my district and state.
