The real pain for rural health care won't be evident until late 2014 or later. That's because it will require time for the loss of federal assistance to hospitals for the indigent (that would have been reduced had the state expanded Medicaid) to drive hospitals to insolvency.

Pay now, pay later, or let 'em close. Deal passed up the feds paying now. It remains to be seen if the state will pay later either by expanding Medicaid after refusing no-match federal funding, provide direct state aid to hospitals, or simply allow them to close.
