Illegal Immigrant charged with Rape in Putman County

The Eatonton Messenger reports that Putnam County sheriff deputies arrested and charged an illegal immigrant in connection with the rape his former girlfriend after using a ruse to get into her home.

Lt. Det. Tracey Bowen said a 30-year-old Hispanic woman on Shady Dale Road called the sheriff’s office at 8 p.m. Sept. 27, and the office recorded it as a domestic call. At the scene, deputies were told that Jose Leandro Mendez, 23, had come to the victim’s home around 6:30 p.m. that evening asking to see her brother. When the victim said he was not there, Mendez requested a glass of water, according to reports

Mendez was charged with rape, false imprisonment and battery. He was being held without bond. The Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, was notified of the illegal immigrant’s arrest and are in the process of placing a hold on Mendez. Standard procedure in cases where illegal immigrants are convicted of a violent felony, is for ICE to deport them.

Putnam County is located in the 10th Congressional District
